San Diego First Time DUI Education Programs

LOMD LOgo.png

If you are convicted of a DUI in San Diego, you will be subjected to a series of penalties such as a 4 month driver's license suspension, 5 years' probation, up to $2,500 in fines and court fees. You will also have to attend a MADD meeting. If your BAC is high or there were aggrevating facts (such as a collision, using force against police, refusal, and others) there could be additional sanctions such as an interlock device, public work service, custody, etc.

You will also have to attend a San Diego First time DUI Education Program.  What are these courses and what does it entail?  There are three different programs for first time San Diego DUI offenders.  The class you will have to go do depends on your blood alcohol time that is settled at the time of the resolution of your case.  The higher the BAC you have the longer the course.

There is three different courses.  They are:

  • 3 Month First Offender Program
  • 6 Month First Offender Program
  • 9 Month First Offender Program.

The 3 month first time DUI program is for people with a BAC between .08% and 0.19%, whereas the 6 and 9 month programs are generally for people with a BAC of 0.20% or higher.

The 3 Month Program

If you are ordered by the court to complete the 3 month first offender program, you are expected to complete the following requirements:

  • Attend 10 education and group sessions (3 hours each)
  • Submit to three individual interviews (at the beginning, midpoint, and end of program)
  • Attend six AA meetings

6 Month Program

If you are ordered to complete the 6 month first offender program, you will have to attend six classes that last two about two hours.

You will have to attend 15 group sessions, that last two hours each session. You must submit to 13 individual interviews, and attend 24 AA meetings.

The 9 Month Program

The 9 month first offender program is 60 hours. It consists of six classes, 22 group sessions, 16 individual interviews, and 36 AA meetings.

Some people begin the DUI education courses before their case resolves to allow them to drive with a restricted license.  Others will wait to see what outcome they have from the court litigation.  It is key you develop a strategy with a knowledgable San Diego DUI attorney to see what strategy is best for you.

There are four locations in San Diego where you can sign up.  Retain and speak to an an attorney to find out which one works best for you.  Navigating through the mandatory terms is one of the most tedious parts of a San Diego DUI.  The key is to be proactive.
