Unintended Consequences of a DUI: NFLer Suspended Three Games For Marijuana DUI charge

I was reading the news today when I came across the article about Steelers RB LaVon Bell who was cut from his job because of a DUI arrest. Worse was this was a "Pot DUI" arrest.

Unintended consequences... it is one of the most appropriate terms for a San Diego DUI. Does someone's decision making need to be scrutinized by their employer if someone gets a San Diego DUI?

A San Diego DUI comes with so many penalties. Some of which happen while the individual walks into court.

I have written in previous articles about DMV license suspensions, San Diego DUI fines, and DUI education courses.

However, today we focus on an individual's job. There are some professions (Nurses, teachers, police) who have to go through a process when receiving a San Diego DUI. Some jobs take it on a case-by-case basis. Should they? I mean even here an NFL Running back lost his job.

On one hand people would say that individual's decision making is in question and it needs to be determined they should continue with their job. On the other hand, who here has not gone out and had a fun time? Could it be a borderline blood alcohol level and just a drive into checkpoint a few miles from home? Were they even impaired? Has the individual shown any signs of alcohol abuse or bad decision making before? The facts should be taken into consideration and not act with a knee-jerk reaction.

It is a valid argument and a case can be made for both sides. I as an employer would ensure that any criminal charge would be brought to my attention. We then would look over the facts to see if there are any flags.

In any event, the unintended consequences of a San Diego DUI go far beyond the DMV and the courts. It can stretch all the way to your livelihood. Below is an article on the issue. Enjoy the day.

Last summer, Steelers running backs Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount were arrested after a cop pulled them over on suspicion of DUI outside of Pittsburgh. The duo's car had the smell of marijuana flying out of it, and after a search, 20 grams of pot was found. At the time, Bell said he didn't know one could catch a DUI charge for being high, but now, he's learning the full force of the law, and it'll cost him a few NFL games. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that he'll be suspended for three games plus docked another game's pay for the DUI charge.

Blount, who was later released by the Steelers (only to re-sign with the Patriots later and win the Super Bowl, which is the greatest tale of "shit happens, whatever" in sports this past year) was hit with a one game suspension for his role in the incident, but because Bell was behind the wheel and plead guilty to DUI, he faced up to a four-game ban, with a minimum of two games. Three games compromises on that, but the third game was tacked on only because marijuana is illegal in Pennsylvania.

Schefter notes in his report that the whole punishment is being received as a bit harsh around the league, but because of the NFL's new personal conduct policy, the league is battening down the hatches on Bell.

The decision will likely have greater recourse for fantasy football owners than actual Steelers fans, because fantasy football>>>>>IRL anything. If you use a top pick on Bell, be sure to grab backup DeAngelo Williams as a handcuff.
