Encinitas DUI Checkpoint Yielded no DUI Motorists

For safety purposes it is good news to hear there was no DUI arrests in Encinitas.  As a San Diego county taxpayer I may have some issues about the resources committed to a project that had no arrests.  Saturation patrols are much more an effective tool in finding impaired drivers.  Encinitas has the San Diego Sheriff patrolling.  It would be interesting to see what the stats are in locating DUI drivers in Encinitas at the checkppoint location.  These are just some policy questions as we as a community handle Encinitas DUI checkpoints.

A DUI checkpoint staffed by San Diego County sheriff's deputies in Encinitas between July 3 and July 4 yielded unlicensed drivers, uninsured drivers and scofflaw youth probationary drivers but no one was found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, authorities said.

The checkpoint was staffed between 8:21 p.m. July 3 and 1:37 a.m. July 4 in the 1800 block Olivenhain Road, Encinitas.

The purpose of the checkpoint was to remove impaired and/or unlicensed drivers from the roadways, public education, and deterrence to increase the safety of all drivers.

Some 1,480 vehicles approached the checkpoint; 1,285 vehicles passed through the primary screening area of the checkpoint and 41 vehicles were directed to the secondary screening area for further investigation.

There were three drivers cited for alleged driving on suspended driver licenses, two registered owners cited for allegedly permitting unlicensed drivers to operate their vehicles, 15 drivers cited for allegedly not having driver licenses, two juvenile drivers cited for probationary driver license violations, and two drivers cited for suspicion of no insurance.

Deputies towed five vehicles, a sheriff's spokesperson said.

This checkpoint was funded by a grant through the California Office of Traffic Safety. The Office of Traffic Safety and local law enforcement urge drivers to "Report Drunk Drivers. Call 911."
