Officers will be cracking down on suspected DUI drivers promising more sobriety check points.

On the day when city and county leaders are urging people around the community not to drink and drive, family and friends of Rocio Leamon are laying her to rest. "It's something that nobody should have to go through," said Lance Rodgers, a family friend of Leamon. Leamon was the mother of three boys, who was killed last month after she was hit by an alleged drunk driver as she walking across the street. Loved ones hope this tragedy will remind people to make better decisions. "It's time to make an alternative choice and it's time for everybody to stand up in the public and try and do what they can to stop drunk driving," said Leamon. Over the summer, 11 people were killed in DUI-related crashes, six in August alone. "This has been the summer of shame when it comes to fatal DUI's and it needs to be a wakeup call for anyone who thinks about drinking and driving," said Bonnie Dumanis, San Diego County District Attorney. Law enforcement says DUI is a 100% preventable crime. If you're going to drink, they say have a plan and that may include using ride sharing companies like Lyft and Uber. Last year, more than 12,000 DUI-related cases were prosecuted in San Diego County. 363 of them were DUI with injury and 17 involved fatalities. "Each statistical number represents a real person, a real family, a real life and a real face. That person's life was either impacted or ended forever by a drunk driver," said Steve Lykins, executive director of MADD. Law enforcement agencies will continue to have increased patrols through September including more DUI checkpoints, not only in San Diego, but other communities like San Marcos and Vista. "DUI's are all about a choice. Make no mistake if you choose to drink and drive this holiday weekend, you should expect to be stopped by one of our law enforcement partners across our country," said Shelley Zimmerman, San Diego Police Chief. During Labor Day weekend last year, law enforcement arrested 24 people for DUI's. This weekend, law enforcement officers say there will be a "no tolerance approach" to impaired driving.
