San Diego Police are planning a DUI and license checkpoint at an undisclosed location in the city from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Friday night.
The department routinely announces the checkpoints without disclosing a location as a deterrent to drunk driving.
As in the past, the location will be chosen based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests to ensure maximum impact.
Officers will be looking for indications that drivers are drunk or impaired by drugs ranging from marijuana to prescription medicines.
Nationally some 10,000 people are killed annually in crashes involving alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers.
