Every year, St. Patrick’s Day weekend is a party to remember. But when it comes to alcohol, Mothers Against Drunk Driving doesn’t want you to soon forget:
“Somewhere in California, hopefully not San Diego County, someone will lose their life,” said Steve Lykins, MADD Executive Director.
A countywide effort called Operation Green Mile will stretch through the weekend festivities to prevent alcohol-related deaths and injuries.
“The message is simple, have a good time but do not drink and drive. Designate someone to drive for you,” San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.
Expect heavy DUI enforcement and officers monitoring local bars and restaurants in the Gaslamp and other hotspots, making sure they don’t over-serve their customers.
The numbers are staggering in San Diego County, last year, there were 18 alcohol-related crashes. One person died and 23 people were hurt.
CHP made 430 DUI arrests statewide, which is a nearly 30 percent increase from 2012.
“None of us are driving. We’re all walking and responsible,” said one partygoer.
It’s illegal for bartenders to over-serve customers who are obviously drunk. It’s a misdemeanor.

Officials say local communities typically experience a spike in drunk-driving accidents during St. Patrick’s Day weekend. On St. Patrick’s Day in 2011, more than a third of fatalities from motor vehicle crashes – 34 percent – were connected to drunk driving. This is a 3 percent spike from the daily average.
