Other than the Gaslamp… no other section of town has more San Diego Checkpoints than Pacific Beach. Not only is it a hub of nightlife in town, but it also has only a few routes to move in and out of it.
The two major checkpoints is on Grand Ave and on Ingraham St (usually before the bridge just after Sea World). Officers are scouting the few streets around the points to see if anyone is trying to avoid them. The checkpoints are run with assembly line precision. It can be for citizens in the area.
In exchange for less DUIs on the street, the citizens of Pacific Beach will have to endure more stops by police. More in the Pacific Beach PB community will have to go through DUI evaluation and Field Sobriety tests even when they are not impaired because the police are looking to arrest. This means the Pacific Beach PB community may be safer because more DUI drivers will be stopped….but at what price?
Last night they arrested several persons for suspected San Diego DUI. What they do not say is that hundreds of cards were stopped
Seven motorists were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in or near an overnight driver’s license/sobriety checkpoint in the Pacific Beach section of San Diego, a police officer said Sunday.
Eight vehicles were also impounded during the checkpoint in the 2600 block of Ingraham Street that began at 11:09 p.m. Saturday and ended Sunday at 3 a.m., said San Diego police officer Mark McCullough.
McCullough said 746 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, with 585 of those vehicles being screened by officers.
