Two North County DUI checkpoints this weekend resulted in nine arrests and multiple citations and vehicles being impounded, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Another checkpoint is set in Poway on Sunday.
The first checkpoint was in San Marcos at 6 p.m. at 100 W. Mission Road, where deputies arrested five drivers on suspicion of DUI’s and made three other arrests for unspecified crimes.
Eighteen motorists received tickets for violations ranging from driving on a suspended license to possession of marijuana. More that 350 cars went through the check.
The other checkpoint, in Encinitas in the 1800 block of Olivenhain Road, concluded early Saturday. One driver was arrested because of a suspected DUI, while 41 others received citations, including 15 for not having a driver’s license.
Nearly 950 vehicles were screened during the Encinitas operation, in which local deputies were joined by officers from the Coronado, Escondido, Harbor and San Diego police departments.
The checkpoints were funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
