San Diego DUI checkpoint near border nets 5 arrests

The border gets a fair share of DUIs in San Diego county.  People should have their fun in TJ and walk across to San Ysidro and take a taxi.  Most of the San Diego DUI arrestees are people out of the area just driving through (heading back to OC, LA, IE, etc).

Here is the story from Saturday night.

Five suspected drunken drivers were arrested at or near a checkpoint near the U.S.-Mexico border that wrapped up early Saturday.

Between 10:52 p.m. Friday and 3:45 a.m., 260 vehicles passed through the checkpoint in the 600 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard near Border Village Road, San Diego police Officer Mark McCullough said.

McCullough said that in addition to the five suspected drunken driving arrests, officers impounded six vehicles.

The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and was part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
