Who shoots a 3 year old Great Dane at a dog park? I sure as hope it can be shown that the great dane bit the small dog viciously. If he just came bouncing up….that officer has issues.
I mean…kick the dog. Tackle the dog. Is really your first reaction is pulling out a gun and actually firing? A police officer is trained in a variety of uses of force….deadly force with a gun is last to be used.
Fire five rounds at a dog park? It is too much to see “deputies are investigating” and “deputies say the shooting was justified” in the same article. Sounds like they already made up their mind.
That deputy needs to be checked out mentally…. his version of keeping the peace should be vetted.
Deputies are investigating after an off-duty National City police officer shot a dog in Bonita.
The incident occurred at about 12:19 p.m. Saturday at the Sweetwater Summit Campgrounds at 3218 Summit Meadow Rd. An off-duty officer was walking with his wife and three dogs – two of which were Chihuahuas and the other a larger dog.
A 3-year-old Great Dane broke free from her chain and went over to one of the little dogs. It is unclear if the dog bit the Chihuahua. The off-duty officer then shot the dog.
The brother-in-law of the dog’s owner says the officer fired five shots.
“I thought they were blanks, but actually when she came over here and laid down, I kind of realized she got shot,” said Luis Alarcon. “After he shot the first shot, I saw the dog running back, and he continued to shoot.”
The dog began to retreat back to a home but died.
Deputies say the shooting was justified.
