Today, she is writing about coffee and San Diego DUIs

I’ve always heard
that drinking coffee will help someone sober up, and if someone needs to drive
home they should drink coffee. However, does coffee really help you sober up?
No. Coffee does not affect how your body absorbs alcohol, and will not help you
metabolize the alcohol faster, in effect sobering you up. Your body will still
have the same amount of alcohol it is as before drinking coffee, and thus
coffee will not help your body get rid of the alcohol. The best way to sober up
is to wait until your body has metabolized the alcohol, usually at least one
hour per standard drink.

However, caffeine is
stimulant, which may make you feel more alert. Since alcohol is a depressant,
the effects of the caffeine may make a person feel that they have sobered up,
that the caffeine has counter-acted the alcohol. Nevertheless, the alcohol is
still present in the body, and will still effect how a person reacts. Thus, if
you have had a couple of drinks, rather than drinking a cup or two of coffee to
sober up, which will not be effective, wait until the alcohol is out of your
system before driving. It is always better to be safe, rather than being sorry
