The summer is going to have a full slate of DUI checkpoints in San Diego county. Be safe and responsible.
A checkpoint for driver sobriety and licensing led to the arrest of two motorists in Escondido, a police lieutenant said Sunday.
The checkpoint was conducted Saturday evening in the area ofAvenida del Diablo and Valley Parkway, said Escondido police Lt. J. Murphy.
A total of 1,659 vehicles drove through the checkpoint and 852 vehicles were given primary screenings, Murphy said.
"Two field sobriety tests were conducted, resulting in two Driving Under the Influence arrests," he said. One was for alcohol and the other was for marijuana.
A new law gives drivers whose only offense was being unlicensed a chance to locate the vehicle's registered owner to take possession or assign the vehicle to a licensed driver, Murphy said.
During the checkpoint eight vehicles were released to the owner or a designated driver and five vehicles were impounded, he said.
There were 21 citations issued, including 12 for being an unlicensed driver, six for driving with a suspended license and four for driving without insurance, Murphy said.
