Citizens can report Carlsbad crime online

On Behalf of | Dec 14, 2014 | Firm News |

I am on the fence about this resource.  It makes reporting crime easier.  I can only imagine some major typos if someone is using their Iphone to make the report.

The issue I have is what if there is a true Carlsbad criminal case and someone wants to just type it in.  As a former prosecutor, I used several 911 calls to illustrate the concern people had when they saw something that raised a red flag.  The audio of that call sets the scene for what that person may (or may) not have had concerns with.

I get situations where the prosecutors believe there was some dire situation occuring, only to hear in the 911 call that it is a cranky neighbor who really did not hear much but wanted something checked out.  The audio of that call is key.  Now, we have an email.  Words, that can often have more interpretations.

It will be interesting to see how the program works and if it is kept.  It may be the wave of the future.  I just see it having a few issues.  I know if I was calling police for mostly any issue I would like to speak to someone. Maybe I am old fashioned.

Carlsbad police are making it easier than ever to report certain crimes the moment they happen thanks to a new online tool.

Residents can fill out a crime report through the City of Carlsbad website as long as it occurred in the city and there is neither suspect information nor evidence of the crime.

This might include vandalism, petty theft, hit-and-run collisions, harassing phone calls or lost property.

If there is suspect information or evidence, an officer should take the report, and one can be requested at (760) 931-2197.
