San Diego DUI arrests up from last New Year’s Eve

In a 12-hour span from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day 2014, there were 324 DUI arrests statewide and 14 in San Diego. In the same time span that led into this year’s holiday, there were 309 DUI arrests statewide and 20 in San Diego County — a 4.6 percent decrease statewide and a 42.9 percent increase in San Diego County.
DUI arrests were also up in Orange County. Last year, CHP arrested 14 drivers there. This year, they arrested 22, a 57 percent increase.
While San Diego County had no fatalities last year, there was one this year. Statewide, fatalities held steady at five. Orange County had no reported fatalities.
The DUI statistics reflect only those arrests made by the Highway Patrol. They cover the period 6:01 p.m. Dec. 31 to 6:00 a.m. Jan. 1. The fatality count is based on reports from all relevant law-enforcement agencies.
The Highway Patrol’s jurisdiction includes all freeways and all roads located in unincorporated areas.
