I am not surprised there were DUI arrests. There is a lot of alcohol flowing. Del Mar is also a healthy cost of a cab ride for most people.
Del Mar interestingly is the border between San Diego DUI cases that get directed to the Vista courthouse or downtown to San Diego. The borderline is Via De Valle, which is the main drive for the Del Mar racetrack. Another interesting point is multiple agencies take part in the checkpoints in Del Mar. So, San Diego DUI arrests from the race track can get mixed up a bit.
For example, Carlsbad PD makes San Diego DUI arrest. Person somehow get sent to downtown jail. Case gets sent downtown. San Diego prosecutors have no idea to connect and get documents and such from Carlsbad PD. If you push the envelope it can work in favor of defense.

Eight suspected drunken or drugged drivers were arrested at or near the Del Mar Racetrack as of the 76th season of thoroughbred racing opened Thursday.
Deputies and police officers from several law enforcement agencies fanned out around Del Mar and in the nearby portions of Encinitas, San Diego and Solana Beach in search of inebriated drivers, sheriff’s Sgt. David Cheever said.
The seven teams of deputies and police officers conducted 47 traffic stops between 4 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday. Cheever said seven suspected drunken drivers were arrested during the patrols, along with one motorist suspected of being under the influence of drugs.
The patrols were funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
