How Does An IID Work?

An IID is a piece of equipment that a mechanic installs in your car. It acts as a sort of blood alcohol test for those who have been convicted of a drunk driving offense.  You must breathe into the device before your car starts. If the device detects a certain level of alcohol via your breath sample, then it will prevent your vehicle from starting. You must also provide breath samples at random intervals or the device will prevent your car from operating. The IID will not respond to anyone else’s breath – you and you alone may provide a sample.
