Interlock Ignition Devices: What People Should Know

Although interlock ignition devices (IIDs) are fairly new technology, they are becoming common penalties for defendants convicted of drunk driving offenses. If you currently face charges for driving under the influence (DUI), you may be facing an installation of the device. To keep driving uninterrupted, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) may require the installation of the device as well.

The Law Offices of Mark Deniz APLC can work to prevent this from happening. From our office in San Diego, we represent clients throughout the metro area who need help with criminal defense matters. You can schedule a free, no-risk consultation with our founding attorney, Mark Deniz, by contacting The Law Offices of Mark Deniz APLC.

How Does An IID Work?

An IID is a piece of equipment that a mechanic installs in your car. It acts as a sort of blood alcohol test for those who have been convicted of a drunk driving offense.  You must breathe into the device before your car starts. If the device detects a certain level of alcohol via your breath sample, then it will prevent your vehicle from starting. You must also provide breath samples at random intervals or the device will prevent your car from operating. The IID will not respond to anyone else’s breath – you and you alone may provide a sample.
