Law enforcement officers will be out in force Friday and throughout the holiday weekend in search of possible impaired drivers in San Diego county.
National City police officers were gearing up to spend the unofficial end of summer manning overnight checkpoints, which are set to begin at 6 p.m. Friday. A second checkpoint at an undisclosed location is scheduled from 6 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday, according to a police statement.
A checkpoint will be set up near the 7900 block of Broadway in Lemon Grove between 8 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, and another will be conducted in Imperial Beach, according to theSan Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies planned a Del Mar-area checkpoint for Sunday and will patrol around the Del Mar Fairgrounds throughout the weekend.
“There’s no excuse for drunk driving in San Diego County,” Sheriff Bill Gore said. “There will be zero tolerance for anyone caught driving drunk, especially during the Labor Day weekend.”
In the city of San Diego, officers planned a checkpoints at undisclosed locations from 10 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday, and another to begin at 10 p.m. Sunday. Several saturation patrol will also be conducted, San Diego police Officer Mark McCullough said.
The efforts to target drunken and drugged drivers is part of the nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Three people were killed and 1,069 were injured in drunken driving crashes last year in San Diego.
